Dr. Vaughan Massie is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopy. He currently serves as team physician for USC Aiken Athletics and several local high schools but also enjoys treating the “weekend warriors.” Dr. Massie believes in treating each and every patient the way he would want himself or a family member to be treated.
Dr. Massie obtained a B.S. in Biochemistry from Rhodes College in Memphis, TN where he also played collegiate tennis. He also completed his medical degree, internship, and residency in Memphis. He received his medical degree with Highest Honors at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, where he was ranked Top 10 in his class. Dr. Massie’s surgical internship was at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, and his residency was at the world-renowned Campbell Clinic- University of Tennessee, where he was Chief Resident. He then went on to complete a sports medicine fellowship at the Hughston Clinic under the direction of Champ Baker, MD and Kurt Jacobsen, MD. His fellowship research project, “Arthroscopic Bursectomy for Recalcitrant Trochanteric Bursitis,” was published and presented as a podium presentation at AANA national meeting.
Dr. Massie currently serves as the Team Physician for USC Aiken Athletics and multiple local high schools. Outside of his practice, he enjoys spending time with family and is an active member of NewSpring Church. His hobbies include golf, court tennis, racquetball, weight-lifting, reading, movies, music, and traveling.

Dr. Massie and his staff went above and beyond to treat my wife when she injured her leg. We wanted to wait to see Dr. Massie, as he had treated myself and my MIL. He did not have an opening for almost two weeks, so they suggested going to ER and if it was emergent, the ER would call them and get me in sooner. We went to the Sweetwater ER in North Augusta, and they were awesome! After x-rays confirmed a break, they called Massie and put her in a small brace because they were out of what they should have used, and told us to go by Massie’s office and change it out. We took their advice And went to the office, but Dr. Massie Wanted to see her before putting her in a different brace, So he stayed late and saw her at the end of the day so she didn’t have to travel back on another day. Nobody does that anymore. His whole office staff never rushed us or made us feel like we were making them stay late. They only made us feel as though we were the priority And took great care of us. Dr Massie treated my husband, my mother, and watched over my son when he played football for South Aiken high school, so when I injured my knee, he was the obvious choice and he did not disappoint. I had an exceptional experience with Dr Massie and his staff. I am a big guy with an extrovert personality. So there is a lot to handle when I come through the door. Ann up front always greeted me with a welcoming smile and was happy to help me anyway she could. AJ is absolutely wonderful as a care giver joyful and professional. You know how you typically sit in the room and wait for the nurse, the doctor and or the specialist. Not here. It was boom boom boom. X-ray tech was in the room within a minute. Then Dr. Massie was in the room within a couple minutes after reviewing the -rays(super friendly by the way). Dr Massie has operated on my husband and me. His attention to his patients is wonderful. He explains everything in details, listens to concerns, answers every question and puts you totally at ease. Today's visit was because I fell on vacation and dislocated my L shoulder. It was handled in Hilton Head but I was told to see a doctor in Aiken. Dr Massie did a rotator cuff repair on this shoulder so I saw him. He told me how lucky I was. I barely sat down after checking in, I was so surprised to be taken in so fast. Then just as fast I was taken to x-ray. Which I appreciated as I was in a lot of pain and had trouble walking, getting up and down.Every person I dealt with was kind patient and caring. Had first appointment with Dr. Massie to address ongoing left knee pain since September. I am a Veteran and I visited the Veterans Affairs ER twice because of excruciating pain as well as my Primary Care Provider who sent me for an MRI.Unfortunately, the wait time is 8 weeks at the VA hospital and then I would still need to wait an additional month to get my results before ever even speaking with an Orthopedic.Thank the Good Lord that I have additional insurance whereas so many Veterans just have to wait it out.Dr. Massie gave me his undivided attention, explained everything clearly, as well as answered my questions and concerns. Having injured my knee from playing tennis and for a second time in three years, I needed someone who could repair my knee and work around existing hardware from a previous surgery. The wait time was minimal - about 5 minutes. Dr. Massie's nurse had an x-ray taken of my wife's hip joint so that it was available for Dr. Massie to examine. When he came into the room. he immediately told us that there was no problem with the hip. We discussed openly pain management. He listens very well and agreed with our proposed routine for management of my wife's pain. He is very nice to deal with and very thoughtful. Dr Massey was wonderful! Explained everything and the surgery went great. Rehab and therapy sessions coming along nicely. Dr Massey will make decisions that are best for you. He is concentrating on his patients & their family. He reaches out to answer any questions straight away. My wife called with a question about medicatio n wearing off on a day after surgery and at midnight on a Saturday. We were pleasantly surprised vs being shocked that a real live doctor answered the office number. He checked with Dr Massey and answered my wife's question and even explained how different pain meds work different muscle systems. I had not had the opportunity to thank Doctor Masie for what he did for my three year old son a few months ago, after going through the emergency room of the children's hospital and not finding a solution to a dislocated elbow.
